Tax Due 15 of the April

An extension for taxes gives you more time to file your tax return, but it does not give you more time to pay what you owe. Understanding how an extension works, including special automatic extensions and the tax extension deadline, can help you avoid penalties, interest, and unnecessary stress.

What Is an Extension for Taxes?

An extension for taxes allows you to delay filing your federal income tax return beyond the standard April deadline. When an extension is properly requested, most individual taxpayers receive additional time to file their return until October 15. This extension applies only to filing the return, not to paying the tax.

Even with an approved extension for taxes, any balance due is still owed by the original tax extension deadline in April.

Tax Extension Deadline and Payment Requirements

The tax extension deadline for paying taxes does not change when you file an extension for taxes. If you owe taxes, you must estimate and pay that amount by the original April deadline. Interest and late-payment penalties may apply if taxes are not paid on time.

Paying as much as possible when requesting an extension can help reduce penalties, even if you cannot pay the full amount owed.

Form Used to Request an Extension for Taxes

To request an extension for taxes, individuals use IRS Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. This form must be submitted by the regular filing deadline and can be filed electronically or by mail.

Form 4868 extends the filing deadline to October 15, but it does not change the tax extension deadline for payment.

Automatic Extension for Taxes if You Are Outside the U.S.

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident living outside the United States on the regular filing deadline, you may qualify for an automatic two-month extension for taxes without filing Form 4868. This generally extends the filing deadline to June 15.

Interest still accrues on any unpaid taxes after the original tax extension deadline. If additional time beyond June is needed, Form 4868 must still be filed to extend the filing deadline to October 15.

Automatic Extension for Taxes Due to Disaster Relief

Taxpayers affected by a federally declared disaster may receive an automatic extension for taxes granted by the IRS. These disaster-related extensions may apply to both filing and payment deadlines, depending on the relief announced.

The IRS publishes specific guidance for affected areas, including revised tax extension deadlines, which can vary based on location and event.

Can a Payment Arrangement Be Made With an Extension for Taxes?

Yes. Filing an extension for taxes does not prevent you from requesting an IRS payment arrangement. If you cannot pay your full tax balance by the tax extension deadline, you may apply for an installment agreement or other payment options separately.

Filing an extension on time helps reduce failure-to-file penalties while you work toward resolving any balance owed.
